'At least we won in-season tournament!' Los Angeles Mayor’s bizarre deleted message to Lakers team after playoffs exit is going viral
Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

After a rough series, the Los Angeles Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs. Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets finished things off in Game 5 at home, as they advanced to the second round. Looking at how things played out for the Lakers, they had a decent season this year, but their offensive strive wasn’t as agile as it was in the previous season.

Fans, as well as the people of Los Angeles, appreciated the team’s run this year despite the early exit. However, the mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, congratulated the squad with a bizarre tweet. The mayor’s tweet caught everyone’s attention, as Rachel Nichols reported the same before it was deleted.

Tough season, but at least we won the in season tournament! Proud of our team, @Lakers. The mayor had written

After the mayor deleted the tweet, she posted another appreciation tweet which was neutral and didn’t seem offensive in any way. Though her first words caught everyone off-guard. It cannot be said for sure whether there still is some frustration behind the Lakers’ performance this season. When it comes to the fans, expectations were not fulfilled.

The Lakers held great hopes at the start of the season

Looking at the roster at the start of the season, the Lakers had great assets including Christian Wood, Cam Reddish, and Jarred Vanderbilt. However, due to injuries, the franchise failed to use any of its assets to their full potential. Fans expected nothing but title contention from the Lakers this year. Players like Gabe Vincent, Jaxson Hayes, and Spencer Dinwiddie heavily underperformed in the postseason, leaving the load to the starting five.

Despite revolving the team around Anthony Davis and LeBron James, the Lakers have failed to build a championship squad in the last four years. There have been changes in the coaching position twice following James’ arrival. Not only that, but the team has brought in several All-Stars, including Russell Westbrook who did not meet the expectations.

The Lakers continue to struggle to build a title-contending roster, as they’ll look to improve this offseason. There are multiple options the franchise can look forward to, however, it heavily depends on the King’s decision to stay. As the offseason approaches, the Lakers will be pretty active this offseason. It will be interesting to see whether James will exercise his player option.
