Kofi Kingston is happy for Swerve Strickland.

In an interview with Tim Battle on the Battleground Podcast, KofiMania and Kingston’s WWE Championship win came up in the conversation. Kingston was asked to comment on how it impacted diversity and representation in professional wrestling. The successes of champions Trick Williams, Oba Femi, Carmelo Hayes, and Swerve Strickland were used as examples.

“To see Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes and Oba doing their thing, it really is a beautiful thing to see,” Kofi Kingston said. “I don’t want to sit here and say, ‘Oh, because I did this, now they’re doing their thing.’ They were going to be successful regardless. But it is a beautiful thing to see people of color out there doing their thing.

“Like you said, Swerve too, I’ve watched his career for a very, very long time, gotten to know him very well over the years, and really, really happy for his success too. It is a beautiful thing. We are keeping it going, and I love it.”

Swerve Strickland defeated Samoa Joe to win the AEW World Championship at AEW Dynasty. With the win, he became the first African-American World Champion in AEW history.
